Losing weight easily sounds like the impossible dream and for many it has been just that for a good portion of their lives. Trust me I can relate. Fad diets and the notion that you can lose all the weight you want overnight can really drag you down when you see that the results don’t match the hype.
The truth is that the easiest way for most people to lose weight is start with small things. The power isn’t in any individual one tactic but in numerous ones. It’s kind of like the difference between one person fighting city hall and dozens; there’s power in numbers so use them to your advantage in your weight loss journey!
Here are some time tested ways to help you slim down and lose your weight for good. Use the ones that make sense for you and watch how easily you can burn that fat off!
1. Slow Down and Eat Like Your on Live TV.
Imagine a million people are watching you eat your meal. Do you think you’d shovel it down as fast as possible then? No. You’ll take your time and not want to look like a pig. The truth is that most people eat WAY too fast. The brain takes a good 15 minutes to catch up to your stomach. Chew your food longer and wait just a few extra seconds in between bites than you normally would. You will absolutely find that you’re eating less because your brain will put out the message that you are full before you eat as much as you did before. This one is probably the most easy to do and can help you lose the extra fat and weight with oh so little effort.
2. Water is Your New Best Friend.
Many of us need coffee to get us going in the morning. No problem. After that though, do all you can to make water your primary drink for the day. The average person in the U.S. takes in an extra 250 calories a day drinking soda. That’s over 85,000 calories a year or like 25+ pounds! On top of that a significant portion of the country is chronically dehydrated which can absolutely lead to weight gain and/or metabolism issues. Don’t like water? Flavor it with fruit or use stuff like crystal light and whatnot. One of my favorites is just ice, water, and strawberries blended with a packet of equal. Doesn’t taste like water anymore and the amount of calories is tiny compared to soda or juice. However you do it, find a way to make water your primary drink and consume lots of it. This is probably the easiest thing you can do to help yourself take in fewer calories yet still quench your thirst.
3. Try to Eat Cereal For Breakfast.
Many studies show that eating cereal for breakfast is a great way to not only slim down but stay that way. Consistent cereal eaters are way less likely to be obese or have diabetes. It’s also very easy and quick to prepare. If you’re like me, you’re probably way to busy in the morning to make anything that takes longer than 2 minutes of your time. Cereal is the answer. Pick something with some fiber in it too and you’ll get two benefits for the price of one. The truth is that cereal is good at any time of the day but it’s even better to get you rolling early in the morning on the way to your weight loss goals.
4. Veggies Add Bulk But Not to Your Waistline.
Do you know you can eat almost twice as much of a pasta salad loaded with veggies than one with just mayo and you’ll consume the same amount of calories? Adding water rich veggies like tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, carrots, etc to foods will help your body get fuller quicker. If you don’t like many veggies, find a list online and find a few you do like. I know many people cringe at the thought but there’s at least a FEW you do like! Here’s one of my favorite and easy ways to add them: I mix black beans and corn in with some cheap salsa and I have a great healthy snack to go with the chips I crave. Instead of eating half the bag (or more!), I’m full after just a small amount. You can also add veggies to omelets. Find a way to bring in more veggies into your diet and I guarantee you’ll consume less calories and lose weight!
5. Can You Lift Five (5) Pounds?
C’mon five pounds. Start there (or even lower if you have to) but lift something for the sake of your health! Weight lifting is the ONLY known way to actually reverse the aging process. No, I’m not talking bodybuilder stuff either. If you just pick up one little 5 pound dumbbell and start out doing 5 minutes a day with it, you will absolutely see a difference. Yeah you need to get your muscles a little sore at first but it’s worth it. A pound of muscle burns twice the calories of fat. If you can just BEGIN to tone up your arms a little, you’ll see a difference in weight loss in the mid section and elsewhere. And that will motivate you to move on to more exercise. You don’t need to go crazy like those infomercials tell you. That’s not possible for most of us. But even you can easily lift 5 pounds for a few minutes a day. Start there and watch the weight loss pile up!
6. Smaller Portions = Smaller You!
It’s a proven fact that the more food on your plate, the more you will eat. That’s REGARDLESS of how hungry you are or not. Study after study has proven it. So how do you fix that? Put less on the plate. I’m not talking a lot less. Not at first. If you normally add a big scoop of mashed potatoes to the plate, trim it down and put 80-90% of that same scoop. Normally eat three or four pieces of fried chicken? Try eating one less. Combine this with what I told you in #1 and you will see a huge difference a month from now when you step on the scale. It’s a simple form of mathematics; Less calories in equals less fat on your body because your body will start converting that fat you already have to energy that it needs. Less fat on your body will make you a happier person! Don’t try to cut everything by half your normal portion. That’s too severe. Just a little bit this week and then a little bit next week. Try it. One step at a time! That’s an easy way to lose weight that most people won’t even notice.
7. Add a Salad to Subtract the Pounds
Salads are quick to prepare and easy to consume. Most importantly they will add a healthy low calorie bulk to your meals that will make you feel fuller while eating less calories. What’s better than that? One of my favorite salads doesn’t even use lettuce! I use fresh spinach leaves which like most lettuce are virtually tasteless but have great benefits. Want to kick that up a notch? Add some crumbled egg whites and bits of turkey bacon to it! That’s a tasty salad that’s easy to make and full of protein instead of carbs! I also enjoy many other types of salads. Pick your favorite veggies that you will eat raw and just start mixing them in with your salad. Many people will tell you to use light dressings and whatnot. I just can’t stomach them so my advice is use a dressing you really like, just use it in moderation. Any extra calories from a tablespoon or two of salad dressing is not going to make or break your weight loss program.
8. Sounds Crazy but Lots of Meals Means Lots of Weight Loss!
It’s crazy to think that you should eat more to weigh less but it’s the absolute truth! Here’s the real deal about your metabolism. If you’re overweight in all likelihood your metabolism is probably way too slow. You can’t kick it into gear overnight, but you can take one easy step that will help you start losing weight and keep it off for good; Eat more often. Just eat less for each meal or snack. Three square meals a day is what most of us have been programmed to believe is the way to live. Reality is that it doesn’t work for many people. Your metabolism wants a steady flow. Food keeps it steady. If you’re diabetic this is even more important so that you don’t have wild swings of insulin. Keep it simple and with small but fairly healthy meals. I like to have a sandwich mid morning or some yogurt or cottage cheese with fruit in between meals. It keeps me satisfied and not apt to binge on something because I’m over hungry.
9. Sing the Blues and the Pounds You will Lose!
Ok tell me how many fast food restaurants do you know are decorated in the color blue? You can’t name one can you? It’s because the color blue acts as a suppressant to the human appetite. Yes, it’s 100% true! So my advice is use blue as much as possible in your kitchen. Blue plates, blue glasses, blue tablecloths; whatever it takes. Don’t laugh! Try it first and you’ll see that it’s just another way to easily lose weight without a whole lot of effort.
